ACTION rises to the challenge and sneak peak of our speakers!

Marc Elliot delivers his inspiring presentation.

TEDx Dress Rehearsal 2011!

Saturday marked the one week countdown, and to celebrate the occasion, members of ACTION club, our tech wizards, and a few of our speakers and performers convened to prepare for the big event.

We were all so impressed and blown back by the talks and performances. Mind you, this was the first time any of us had actually witnessed the talks in person.

To prepare for next week, ACTION girls, organizers, speakers, and performers alike enjoyed “test running” the Marshmallow Challenge, an activity we plan to bring to table at the actual event. The energy was high as teams competed against each other in the hopes of building the tallest free-standing structure using uncooked pasta, masking tape, string, and a single marshmallow. You’re going to love this challenge next week, we’re sure of it.

Take a look at some of the pictures from the dress rehearsal, and get pumped for November 19th!

Co-chair of the Tech committee, Maria, teaches her tech girls a lesson on "mic'ing" the speakers.

Performer and proud ACTION member, Zoe Himmel, practices her dance.

One member shared that she believes our event will give students confidence to share their breakthroughs with each other and with the world.  Another shared that she hopes students will continue to talk about the speakers and performers after the event and be inspired to be agents of social change.

Here’s what our speakers said… Part Deux.

Two of our amazing speakers, Tammy Tibbetts and Carolyn Gregoire, will talk about their work with teen empowerment and using technology for social good.

Tammy and Carolyn shared their BREAKthroughs with us:

“My BREAKthrough is when I realized the same skills I used to prepare an American teen for her elaborate prom could also provide girls living in dire poverty the simple chance to go to school.” -Tammy Tibbetts

“My BREAKthrough came when I realized that teenagers have voices — loud voices — and that I wanted to create an online platform for them to speak their opinions and be heard.”- Carolyn Gregoire

Don’t miss the chance to hear Tammy and Carolyn and our other inspiring speakers, performers and slam poets at TEDxYouth@Hewitt on November 19th, 2011. Register today!

Here’s what our speakers said…

When asked what his BREAKthrough moment was, Luke Holden replied…

“My breakthrough came when I left the comfort of a consistent paycheck and dedicated all of my efforts toward pursuing Luke’s Lobster full-time. Making the leap of faith to decide to be self-employed was a necessary risk.”

We are thrilled to have Luke speaking about entrepreneurship and his journey at TEDxYouth@Hewitt. Tune in to read other speakers’ BREAKthroughs, and get ready for an eye-opening event on November 19th!
